My primary interests are in the field of psychology and religion. The former interest comes from my 40+ years as a licensed psychologist in various clinical, supervisory teaching, and consulting positions. The latter comes from my 2 1/2 years as a Catholic priest (1966-1968), which was preceded by 12 years of seminary education. My early publications reflect my work as a psychologist and in particular as an administrator in a residential treatment center for children.
As I neared retirement I was able to focus more on the recent developments in the historical-critical work being done in religious studies, particularly by a group of scholars known as the Jesus Seminar. I have published eight articles for their publication, The Fourth R, as well as given workshops in the San Francisco Bay area on recent scholarship on the Scriptures. In 2012, Polebridge published my book Rescuing Religion: How Faith Can Survive its Encounter With Science. In it I outlined ways religious individuals and communities could incorporate new findings into traditional perspectives. Wipf and Stock published my second book, which is titled Agnostic at the Altar: Searching for Transcendence in the Story of the Prophets. It places the story of their experience of the transcendent into an evolutionary and multicultural context. It will be released in summer, 2019.
I have been married for 48 years. We have two adult children and three grandchildren. My degrees include a BA in philosophy from St. Joseph's College (1962) and a PhD in clinical psychology (1974).
